Pushing Back the Dark by Faith

I heard two songs on Family Life Radio on my way home yesterday afternoon that dove-tailed with each other.  The first one was "What Faith Can Do" by Kutless.  The second one was "Pushing Back the Dark".  As I listened to the first song, I thought about lots of people and situations I know about, some of them in the churches I serve, others in the community and world.  It was an opportunity to pray and an encouragement.

I posted the song on social media with these words:

"I don't know your circumstances, but maybe this song will encourage you. As I pray for people and situations, as I work through my ordination paperwork, as I seek to live, love, and lead like Jesus...."

Here are the lyrics to "What Faith Can Do":

Everybody falls sometimes
Gotta find the strength to rise
From the ashes and make a new beginning
Anyone can feel the ache
You think it's more than you can take
But you are stronger, stronger than you know
Don't you give up now
The sun will soon be shining
You gotta face the clouds
To find the silver lining
I've seen dreams that move the mountains
Hope that doesn't ever end
Even when the sky is falling
I've seen miracles just happen
Silent prayers get answered
Broken hearts become brand new
That's what faith can do
It doesn't matter what you've heard
Impossible is not a word
It's just a reason for someone not to try
Everybody's scared to death
When they decide to take that step
Out on the water
It'll be alright
Life is so much more
Than what your eyes are seeing
You will find your way
If you keep believing
I've seen dreams that move the mountains
Hope that doesn't ever end
Even when the sky is falling
I've seen miracles just happen
Silent prayers get answered
Broken hearts become brand new
That's what faith can do
Overcome the odds
You don't have a chance
(That's what faith can do)
When the world says you can't
It'll tell you that you can!
I've seen dreams that move the mountains
Hope that doesn't ever end
Even when the sky is falling
I've seen miracles just happen
Silent prayers get answered
Broken hearts become brand new
That's what faith can do
That's what faith can do
Even if you fall sometimes
You will have the strength to rise

It hit me this week that I want to be ordained.  Okay, that might be an odd thing, but I am really slow in my processing.  Go back through my blog posts and you'll find that it was year 7 of seminary that I finally claimed being a seminarian.  It takes me a while to see myself as God sees me.  I don't always understand why God would call me to be or do certain things, but I finally start to live into it, feeling more comfortable in the skin God has made me.  And, this week was the week when the ordination skin struck me.  I think it's because I'm feeling the crunch and pressure of the required paperwork.  On top of that we have charge conference stuff on the horizon and we have four sets of leadership rolls to prepare in our parish, meaning we have at least 4 meetings of our Nominations and Leadership Development Teams.  Whew.  One thing at a time, right?!  I am counting on strength to rise, for hope that doesn't end, and dreams that can move mountains.  Not just for all the paperwork, but for many people and situations.

The second song, "Pushing Back the Dark" by Josh Wilson was also encouraging, but in a different way. As I listened to it, I was reminded to not give up, to not lose heart.  Do you ever need that message?  I do.  There are times and days when I question living, loving, and leading like Jesus.  I question the sanity of continuing to fight the good fight of seeking to be love and light in the world.  And, then, I hear encouragement to keep 'pushing back the dark'.  Good message.  Not all dark is bad for us.  There is the dark that can draw us closer to God, the dark in which we wait in silence and rest in the unknowing.  That's a different kind of dark.  That's not the "dark" the song was talking about.  That dark can't be pushed back.  It has to be lived through.

Lyrics to "Pushing Back the Dark":

One million reasons why, you shouldn't even try.
After all you're just one heart, a single candle in the dark.
And there are shadows here, feeding on your fears,
That you don't have what it takes - who are you to make a change?
But oh, oh, don't underestimate the God you follow.
Whatever you do, just don't look back.
Oh somebody needs the light you have.
Whatever you do, just don't lose heart.
Keep on pushing back the dark,
Keep on pushing back the dark.
The city on a hill, it should be shining still.
Every sinner saved by grace, has a purpose, has a place
Inside the bigger plan, we might not understand.
But if we just keep walking on, we will see the Kingdom come, yeah.
Whatever you do, just don't look back.
Oh somebody needs the light you have.
Whatever you do, just don't lose heart.
Keep on pushing back the dark,
Keep on pushing back the dark.
Oh, oh, don't underestimate the God you follow.
He is the light that burns inside your soul,
So keep on shining 'til the whole world knows.
Whatever you do, just don't look back.
Oh somebody needs the light you have.
Whatever you do, just don't lose heart.
Keep on pushing back the dark,
Just keep on pushing back the dark, dark.
Whatever you do, just don't look back.
Cause somebody needs the light you have.
Whatever you do, just don't lose heart.
Keep on pushing back the dark,
Keep on pushing back the dark, yeah
When you feel like you're too small
(Let your lights all shine)
To do any good at all
(Let your lights all shine)
Like a sunrise through the window
(Let your lights all shine)
Like a symphony crescendo
(Let your lights all shine)
We are waking up again, we are rising from the dead
(Let your lights all shine)
We are shining like the stars, we are pushing back the dark
(Let your lights all shine)
Yeah, we are pushing back, pushing back the dark
(Let your lights all shine)
We are pushing back, we are pushing back, pushing back the dark
(Let your lights all shine)
Just pushing back, we are pushing back, pushing back the dark
(Let your lights all shine)

Wherever you are on your faith journey, may there be encouragement today to not give up, to not lose heart and to know that you are a beloved child of the Creator.

Blessings on your journey,

Debra
